MURALS OF
ANTAL NEMCSICS

Work started on the renovation of churches damaged in the war from the middle of the 1960s. I received more and more invitations secretly, without the permission of the state, to create frescoes, mosaics, stained glass windows for churches. I was glad to accept these jobs, because I saw not only the realization of the vows I made as a young man, but also the opportunity of creating the synthesis offered by several hundred year-old church spaces and paintings of a modern approach placed in these spaces. I worked a lot with my wife, often on 15-20 meter high, very unstable scaffolds patched together from ladders and barn doors. My growing children were playing around us and often helped us with bringing up a bucket of water or a brush that fell on the floor, and later on with painting a flat surface. We went round almost the entire country. In the meantime I received invitations from my colleagues in the workplace, from young architects to prepare a mural or a mosaic on the walls of a residential building, school or other facilities designed by them.
